It’s Human Trafficking Prevention Month

President Obama has declared January Human Trafficking Prevention Month. No better time for all you advocates to learn more about trafficking and human rights violations, yes?

It’s also a perfect opportunity to remind everyone that Sex Work IS NOT the same thing as trafficking. The Global Network of Sex Work Projects (NWSP) posted a briefing paper on the topic and you can get the PDF for FREE; I hope you check it out and learn more about sex workers and their experiences with “the conflation of trafficking, sex work, migration, and mobility!” If you’re into sex-positive, transnational feminism you should really be thinking about this stuff. Key words: consent vs. exploitation.

Eesha Panding @ Feministing.com also crafted a brief overview of the complicated nature in defining and discussing human trafficking. Language and rhetoric are powerful things, people!

While you’re at it, check out the NWSP site. It’s informative and trustworthy (and the site even has a visually appealing layout!).
